Obituary of Vernon G. Weltsch

Vernon G. Weltsch, 81, of Cambridge, died peacefully at home on Friday, June 30, 2017.

Vern was born on April 18, 1936, in Norwood, MN to Chris and Edna (Sheele) Weltsch.  He attended Springfield High School.  After graduating, he spent four years in the United States Air Force.  Vern was a Korean War Veteran and was honorably discharged.  After his military service, Vern enrolled at Brown Institute and graduated with a degree in Electronics.

In 1961, Vern married Carol Hunt in Rice Lake, Wisconsin.  They resided in Minneapolis until their move to Cambridge in 1964.  Vern transferred to Cambridge with Control Data and worked there for several years.  In 1978, Vern and Carol purchased Clayco Products Company.  He owned and operated Clayco until his retirement in 2002 when he sold his business.

Vern was a member at Cambridge Lutheran Church, was on the Church council for several years, and was a member of the Cambridge Lion’s Club.  He enjoyed daily coffee with his buddies at People’s Cafe, golfing, curling, playing cards, and the many fishing trips to Canada.  He especially enjoyed visits with close neighbors and friends. 

Vern is preceded in death by his parents; sister: Lucille Schmidt; brothers: Cliff, Clint, and Mike; and an infant son. 

            He is survived by wife, Carol, of 56 years; daughters: Cassandra (Pete) Nelson of Saint Peter, Karen (Joel) Schwartz of Lake Elmo, Rhonda (Noah) Mittlefehldt of Duluth; sisters: Patricia Iverson of California, Shirley (Ken) Hakes of Aitkin; 6 grandchildren: Mitchell and Margaret Nelson, Jack and Sam Schwartz, Joran and Ryan Mittlefehldt; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, July 6 at 11:00am at Cambridge Lutheran Church.  Visitation will precede the service starting at 9:30am at the Church.  There will be a private family burial in Barron, Wisconsin following the service.  Memorials may be directed to Cambridge Lutheran Church or donor’s preference.
