Obituary of Loretta Yvonne Schroeder

Loretta Yvonne Schroeder (Herrick) age 85 passed away peacefully February 10, 2018 at Prairie Cottages Memory Care, Isanti, MN.  A loving wife of 65 years, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend to many.  She will be deeply missed by all.  Loretta was born July 6, 1932 to Cyril and Dora (Schultz) Herrick in Montevideo, MN.  Her family moved to New Ulm, MN when she was entering the 5th grade.  She graduated from New Ulm High School with the class of 1950, attended college for 1 semester in St. Cloud, then worked for Dayton’s downtown Minneapolis and later as receptionist in Dr. Howard’s Office in New Ulm. On February 21, 1953 she married her high school sweetheart Gordon Schroeder, who became her friend in the 5th grade, when they were both new students in the class.  Upon Gordon’s graduation from the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, they moved back to New Ulm and then followed career opportunities to Melrose and Redwood Falls, MN before returning to the Courtland/New Ulm area to farm alongside family.  When her children became active in 4-H she volunteered as an Adult Leader for Courtland 4-H Club.  A very compassionate and loving person, she made a place in the family home for her father and became his caregiver for 14 years. In 1974, they left the farm and moved to Princeton, MN and later to their current home in Cambridge.  She was an active member of the United Methodist Church wherever they moved, teaching Sunday School at Oakwood United Methodist Church in New Ulm and in 1982 serving as Vice President of the Methodist Women’s Joy Circle at Princeton United Methodist Church.  She volunteered at the Princeton and later the Cambridge Food Shelves and also at the Shalom Shop in Cambridge.  Through the years she enjoyed weekly card club and couples bowling leagues, gardening, getting together with friends and traveling with family to visit family.

Loretta is preceded in death by her parents Dora and Cyril Herrick.  She is survived by her husband Gordon, daughter Kristen (Randy) Smoyer, son David (Lynne) Schroeder, daughter Kay (Jim) Namovich, brothers Virgil (Shirley) Herrick, Sidney (Nyla) Herrick, Dallas (Judy) Herrick and sisters JoAnn (Jack) Meyer and Kathryn Grebner; 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Loretta’s family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the dedicated caregivers at Prairie Cottages Memory Care in Isanti and St. Croix Hospice who showed great care and compassion to Loretta during her illness.
