Jeff, Traci, and Family:
With heavy hearts Lois and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Jack. We have many memories of Jack and Fran over the years. They were always so welcoming to visit with us.
I would like to share a few memories of Jack. Having served as a member of his middle school coaching staff over most of his coaching years at Cambridge – Isanti, I was fortunate to observe Jack’s unmatched coaching style. Astutely, Jack exceeded high expectations as a coach, one that envisioned the totality of basketball competency. For example:
1. Jack coached each game as if it were for a championship.
2. Jack requested that each of his coaches compile a basketball skill lesson plan folder for each day’s practice. We were to log the number of minutes regarding each skill.
3. To Jack, each grade level of basketball was as important as another, including varsity.
4. Jack believed that the basketball program was the players’ program . . . the community’s program.
5. Opposing coaches revered him as one of the best in the state.
How wonderful it is that Jack could perceive all the “Hall of Fame” awards he received. Jack is truly legendary and one of high integrity.
During my last visit with Jack, I told him that the community still marvels at the upset win over Duluth Central in the 1978 Region Seven Final. Jack smiled and said, “That was no upset!”
When one thinks about Jack as a teacher and coach, the following Bible verse comes to mind:
Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Jeff, Traci, and Family, your father was a “mountain of a man!”
Blessings,
Bob and Lois Salo
