Obituary of Phillip J. Jakubic
Phillip “Phil” John Joseph Jakubic of Cambridge, MN passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 9th, 2019 at the age of 86.
Phil was born on December 22nd, 1932, to Emil and Mary Lucille Jakubic. Phil grew up in Northeast Minneapolis. He married the love of his life Betty Jane Nelson “Jane” on September 12th, 1952. Phil spent his career with the railroad as a switchman at Great Northern and then Burlington Northern. They raised their two children, Dennis and Debra, while living in Richfield. Moving to Buffalo in 1972, they built their home on Dean Lake. After 22 years, they retired and moved to Cambridge. Traveling in retirement captured many fond memories of their motorhome trips with Donna and Truman Thorsen and visiting Jane’s brother, Dick and Donna Nelson. Phil and Jane also spent 23 winters in Mesa, Arizona. They were happy campers at Springvale Campground for 27 years, where Phil and Jane were often seen zipping around on their sporty golf cart. Phil, motivated by his faith, volunteered at Shalom, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Cambridge Food Pantry, and Common Ground: A United Methodist Community.
Phil was all about family. He treasured spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Phil loved the outdoors. You could always find him working on yard projects, picking raspberries, grilling, hunting, or fishing, and was always up for another game of cribbage.
Phil was preceded in death by his mother, father, and stepmother Alice " LaLa”; brothers Emil, Robert “Jake”, Thomas “Tom”, Donald “Don” Morrow, and Richard “Dick” Morrow.
Phil will be missed by his wife of 66 years, Jane; children: Dennis (Sandy) Jakubic and Debra (Kevin) Thorson; grandchildren: Chad, Jamie, David, Allesha, Daniel, Peter, and Elizabeth; many great grandchildren; and many other dear family and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, May 18th at Common Ground: A United Methodist Community, located at 404 Cypress Street N, Cambridge, MN 55008 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before the service.
Interment Cambridge Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, any gifts received will be donated to Phil’s favorite charities.
