Marlene, My deepest sympathies to you and your family. I was very shocked as I am sure everyone was to hear about Merle. He survived all the aches and pains and then this. The one time I met him he also had on that friendly smile as in this picture, I can only imagine that he always had a smile on his face. The man upstairs has the privledge to pick and choose who he wants, I guess it was time for a friendly smiling face. Stay as strong as you always are. Sincerely, Jay

I distinctly remember the first time I heard the name "Westover". I was an 8th grader and the radio announcer was amazed at the basketball game Merle was playing against Flandreau. I think he scored 36 points. I later was able to meet Merle and had the honor of playing on the same team as brother Tom. Those of us from the area know what an impact Merle and his siblings had on the city of Egan and high school athletics. I remember Merle as a quiet, friendly and supportive "sport hero". My condolences to the family.

There never was a basket too hard to make, a pass to hard to catch, or a race too hard to win for Merle. I learned a lot from Merle during the days a Egan School. He is and was a winner. His smile has not changed a bit! May his memories light our path as we go on with out him.

We would like to send you our deepest sympathy. The little bit I knew Merle I could sense that he was a very loving and devoted husband and father. The love he showed Jon without care to who saw it, made me realize the depths of his love and devotion to his family. I will be forever great full for the love he showed Marcia and his treatment of her as if she was his own daughter. Our thoughts and prayers are with you through these trying times. My life has been blessed knowing this remarkable man if even for a short time. May God bless and comfort you in the coming days. Sincerely Maria, Barry and baby James

I asked Merle every morning how his day was going, knowing what response I would get, and he never disappointed me with replying "horse-shit".
I will dearly miss seeing that smile every day.
My sympathies to his family. Merle was such a formidable person that he will never be forgotten.
I miss him alot.

Marlene and family, My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. I was so sad to hear about Merle. He was such a great guy, and you were such a neat couple. The good times at Egan High School will never be forgotten. My most recent memory was visiting with the two of you at Gwen's auction sale -- it was fun catching up, and you two were so happy. Dear Marlene and the Westover Family: Our thoughts and prayers are with you today and in the days ahead. Growing up in Egan we got to know everyone in town. School days were exciting, and we still remember when the 3 oldest Westover boys were introduced as starters at basketball games and in future years what all Westovers' contributed to the school and community. Yard lights never went off during the nights in Egan - there was always someone shooting hoops someplace in town. Something was always going on in the neighborhood! Memories keep the spirit alive in all of us. "If you listen with your heart you will always be able to hear Merle's love all around you!" Take care and God bless! Jerry & Bonnie (DeLay) Hemmer

Marlene, Arlene, Bob, and the Westover family, My deepest sympathy is extended to all of you at this time. My Dad always thought the world of the Westover boys especially on the basketball court, the football field, or running track. Dad was always involved with the sports scene at school and thought highly of all of you. When girls sports came to being, he enjoyed watching the girls play as well. Many times I go through Cambridge on my way to my sister Carol's in Luck, Wisc. You are all in my thoughts and prayers these days. A memorial will be given in Merle's name to the Egan Veterans Memorial Park. Love and prayers, Jane DeLay

Marlene, Jon, Marsha and all the brothers and sisters I want to express our deepest sympathy's for you and the family... I have always had so much respect for Merle and your family.. My only regret is that I did not get to see Merle, Marlene and Jon more often... Merle, married a wonderful lady in Marlene and had a awesome son in Jon. The Holidays, Birthday Parties, Reunions were great because we got to catch up and hear about the good old days(the good times and also the trouble they all got into(haha)), the fishing trips, the vacations along with what was new and exciting their lives... I always looked forward to giving Merle grief over the the kind of beer he drank. This last Christmas was especially great to hear about the new baby... Jon I know that you can only be proud of your dad and what he has done in his life, especially Merle and Marlene raising the most kind, caring, determined and respected son that you have become.. Although dad says he can still outfish you... HAHA Marlene you have been the glue, the caretaker and the teacher of this family and I too am in awe of you and the type of mom, and wife you are... You are always so kind to others and I respect you so much for that. Merle gave the greatest gift anyone could give, himself for the benefit of others... In all the pain and sorrow at least we can think of him not only being the great son, brother, husband, and father but also of giving of himself to others. As no words can help the pain that your family is feeling now.. Always remember that we love you and cherish you as our family.. GOD WILL TAKE CARE OF MERLE AND KENNY, AND MERLE WILL CONTINUE TO LOOK DOWN ON YOU AS A FAMILY AS GUIDE YOU WITH HIS LIGHT... Love you all!!! Trish, Hannah and Noah

To the Merle Westover family, you have my deepest sympathy at this very sad time. My friendship with Merle goes back over 40 years to the times at Egan High School in the "1960" We shared many great times together. He will be missed. Having recently lost my father I have come to realise that losing a family member is a lot like having an injury, the pain really hurts at first, then as time goes by the pain starts to lessen, but the scar stays visible for a very long time.
