Bob and I did several trips to Japan. His leadership enabled us to do so much and experience so much. WE had such a good time when we hosted a Yuasa Sister City delegation in Cambridge. Bob and I went to various businesses to ask for contributions. I saw how Bob was so diplomatic and respected. One of the business owners was not polite and I got a little mad. Bob laughed it off and we went on. No problem. Also, there was the time that Bob used the wrong Japanese word and caused a great deal of laughter. It was a reference to a woman's breast rather than the delightful food we were eating. Thank you for teaching me so much, Bob. It is so nice to see Della around town. Love is all around.

The class of '51 lost one of its outstanding classmates. I have many cherished memories of Bob that I will never forget. During our Junior and Senior years, I got to know Bob well because we were involved in similar activities. Bob was involved in all sports, and I was a cheerleader. Nancy and I were co-editors of the school paper, the "Mora Mirror," and Bob was our sports editor - the perfect person for the job because of his love of sports. We were also in choir together. Bob was master of ceremonies at every class reunion. The class of '51 has lost someone so very special. In fact, the world has lost someone very special. Bob, you will always be in my thoughts and my heart.

I knew Bob from the age of 6 until about 12 years old. He taught me to swim. I read where others say, "I think of him often." That is very true. I am now 61 years old and I still think of Bob often. I remember the hugs I got when I got on the bus to go to fish lake to learn to swim. I loved those classes and I loved Bob as my teacher! We all did. I have thought of him so often through the years and I have used him as an example in my classes. We never know what kind of an impact we have on others. His kindness, skill, dedication has impacted my life in so many ways as I read it has so many other lives. I was shocked to find out that He was only 26 years old when he began to teach me to swim. He seemed so very much older to that shy little 6 year old girl. I loved the trips over to the Foley pool in the summer, also. Thank you, Bob, for all you have done for others. Your heart and love for others is a tribute to you and your family. I want to say to Bob's family, I am so sorry for your loss. Thank God we will see each other again. In His Service, Rev. Today I got an email
From a classmate class of '51
To tell me Bob had passed away
His final race was won.
We spent four years together
Then went our separate way
We saw each other three more times
In the sixty years that end today.
His life affected many
In a long and busy life
He will be missed by all he touched
His children and his wife.
We all will run the final race
And as we turn that final bend
Our definitions may be different
But today I lost a friend.
Condolence to Della and your family,

I was very deeply saddened to hear of Bob's passing. He is a big part of the rich memories I have growing up in Mora during the 50's and early 60's. These are memories of not only of Bob, but of the entire Theis family: the store on main street and the cabin at Ash River. Bob taught me many things. Among these were swimming, golf, how to drive a stick shift car and life in general. Particularly noteworthy of my memories were the months that Bob resided right next to our house on Forest Avenue when he was living with the Woodbeck family. He was a great example and inspiation for all who grew up during what now seems like idyllic times so long ago. There are also more recent memories of Bob playing Santa at Riverwood in Cambridge when my late mother and father in law, Earl and Sally Anderson, were residents there. My deepest sympathy to Della and Bob's entire family. We are all enriched and blessed with wonderful memories. Thank you Bob. Bob Childress Sewanee, TN

"If you want people to change, hit them in the pocket-book"
Later, when I met him when I was in my 40's, I greeted him as "Mr. Theis" and he told me to call him "Bob". You know, he always treated us with respect, like we were folks stepping out in the world with what he had to teach us and when we met there, it was right to call him by his first name then. It was good to see him.

Dear Della and Family, Bob has been an indelible part of my life from the time I met him at about 5 to this very day. I think I first met him through our neighbor, Chuck Woodbeck, when I was a very little girl. That meeting was followed by those wonderful trips to Fish Lake on the school bus for swimming lessons. Bob taught me how to be secure in water. I can't help but think that the confidence I gained in that uncertain arena has been a valuable pattern for traversing the travails of life. Although many years have passed since I have seen him or you, I don't get into a pool, lake or ocean without being grateful to him and remembering his lessons. We learned to acclimate ourselves to the cold water gradually, to tread water and do rhythmic breathing. He coached me through what seemed an interminable swim to become a junior lifesaver. All of these skills translate into life skills: take some things gradually, learn to keep your head above water although you are going nowhere, find a rhythm and persevere. I can't help but think that those childhood lessons he taught became part of my core. I always loved Bob. His sweetness was beyond measure and optimism contagious. How wonderful that you had him! I can see from the photos posted here that he never got old. He was a superb coach and teacher. His calm, patient encouragement led me to strive for higher goals in the water and henceforth in life. He was just plain wonderful. The postings here show the impact that he had on me, he had on others. All his life he just kept giving. We are all so much better for having known him! My sincere condolences. I know you will miss him terribly. His light does shine through all those lives he has improved. May you be comforted. Della, we have no words to express our sorrow. Bob was such an inspiration both of us. He not only taught me while I was in school, but also taught Tracey and I in the Legion. I can remember plowing streets when I worked for Cambridge, it was not unusual to see Bob out clearing driveways up and down the street with his face-mask on. He taught me more than I believed anyone could, especially during my years as Commander in the Legion. Della, we miss and Love You, and send you all our Love and Prayers, God Bless. Mark and Tracey.

I will particularly remember when we were sent back from an Afs meeting in Braham as we did some mischief and how he dealt with it with authority yet with agreat sense of humour. I will always fondly remember Mr. Theis from the inaugural trip to Yuasa, Japan. Many of us were nervous and excited at the same time and Mr. Theis helped us to embrace the experience to the fullest. I can see him now at the city hall in Yuasa greeting the city officials, making friends at the school and getting on the train for our trip back to Toyko. I don't think we could have had a better advisor or teacher. Later in life, I remember his dedication to the American Legion and frequently remember seeing him at various Legion functions and events. He was always quick with a smile and to say hello. I remember him even trying to get me to call him Bob. But even in my thirties, he was still my teacher and I could only call him Mr. Theis! Wishing strength to the Theis family as they forge ahead during this difficult time and please know that Mr. Theis is remembered fondly by many of his students and was considered a friend to many. Words cannot describe the admiration I had for Mr. Theis. He was my favorite teacher in high school. I remember getting a lot of good-natured teasing from him, but what stays with me most is the words he wrote in my senior yearbook (1977) saying he thought of me as a friend. I went on to become a teacher myself and the most important thing I learned from him about teaching was to build the relationship with your students, then work on the content. I only wish I had kept in contact with him over the years. My heartfelt condolences to the family. He was a great man.

I have many fond memories of Bob as a neighbor while growing up and going to school. He was kind enough to let us ride to school with him at times rather than take the bus and I remember a song that was always playing in the 8-track player during those excursions for the benefit of his daughter ... "we're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo - how about you, you, you". At least that is the part that is forever etched into my mind. :-)
.....
I enjoyed having Bob as a golf coach and swim instructor, and helping him with the varsity football stats. And I enjoyed having him and his family as neighbors. He was always a warm and caring person with good principles and a compelling desire to give back to his community. He was a really good person, that always shared a smile or laughter with me, and I am truly grateful for the time that I spent with him.
.....
The world is a better place because of Bob and his generous spirit. He will be missed, but he'll always be with me in memory.

With his heart of gold, Bob Theis was a treasure to our community and to our family. He was always there for us, whether it was to write a story or to delight our grandchildren as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. He gave so much of himself to honor and remember our military veterans, to deliver meals to the homebound, to give Cambridge-Isanti students recognition, to help the sisters and children at Li'l Farm and to spread cheer wherever he went. We miss you and love you, Bob.

Reflecting back to the years that I knew Mr Theis, he was a friendly, easy going teacher. In my senior year of high school, he asked me to help him grade papers, which was nice, because I didn't have to sit in study hall! :)He will be missed by many people...friends and family. Rest in peace.

Such sad news! Mr. Theis was a wonderful neighbor, family friend, teacher and all around person! I spent many hours at their house ... As a little girl, just visiting. Then as a babysitter. I rode to school with him for years! He was a fun, caring and thoughtful teacher. Tough when he needed to be, but always taught with the true purpose of educating and helping us learn. He always incorporated fun into the classroom.
My sincere sympathies to Della, Ann and Peter. He will truly be missed by all.

Bob cared so deeply for everyone around him and gave selflessly of his time and resources. I have so many fond memories of Bob that I could write forever. The only thing I can say is that my life was truly made better by knowing him and having the gift of his love in my life. I can never repay the gifts or kindness that he or his family have given me over the many years, I can only say that I love you and you will be forever missed! Rest in peace!

My heart is heavy. Mr. Theis was my favorite high school teacher. He made such a difference in my life. I was also lucky enough to get to know him better through AFS. I have so many great memories from those year with my friend Polly. It wasn't until I started dating and then married David Barrett that Bob became like family to me. I believe that there are people that touch your life and it stays with you forever. Mr. Theis and his spirit will always be cherished by me. David is deeply saddened but I know he will leave his message when he's able. Much love to Della, Ann and Peter. Our love and prayer surround you!

Bob...Mr. Theis! The memories come flooding in, too many to comment on. I can still see him walking down the high school halls with a twinkle in his eye and a hop in his step, keys jingled from his pocket. The fire in his footsteps as he ran intensely down the football field. The passion in his eyes as he taught what he loved. The Cadillac pulling in the driveway to pick me up for church or CCD. Seeing him in the pew flashing that great smile as I was getting confirmed. Showing me his "sister country" Japan, rich in culture and beauty. Life changing situations and Bob was there! As a teenager struggling to find my way, he taught me a powerful lesson that remains with me every day "Cassandra, just always be yourself. Nothing else matters, just be you." He lit a flame in many of us which will continue to burn in his honor. All my love to Della, Ann, Hiro, Peter and all five beautiful grandchildren!

I'll forever correlate Johnsonville brats with Bob Theis and our trip to Japan, China, and Hong Kong. Ya see it was Bob who coordinated the bratwurst selling fund raisers for the AFS students in front of the County Market grocery store to fund our trip to Yuasa, Japan. We AFS students spent countless weekends outside that grocery store selling brats to bank up funds for our upcoming trip. It's an odd correlation but I've always been reminded of Bob and the summer we went to Japan whenever I smell brats cooking. The trip to Asia was unforgettable and gave me memories for a lifetime. I'll also never forget him as the most joyous and enthusiastic Santa ever. He was a phenomenal teacher and loved by countless people in his community. His endless energy and enthusiasm for life and his students shined brightly and inspired everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. I can just picture him shaking all kinds of hands in Heaven and his happy smile is as infectious as always. My deepest condolences to his family during this time.

Bob was a fantastic man and teacher. Imagination and pep and energy! A great Santa Claus every year! Setting up Jananese exchange students and their hosts to TP his house and then have them picked up by an off-duty officer to meet a judge in court! He knew how to make memories that last. A legacy he leaves of more lives enriched by his presence than I can count. God Bless you, Bob Theis, and your family. Enjoy your eternal reward. We miss you.

As playful as he could be my earliest memory was his stern speech about the bathroom rule to young swimmers; anyone afraid or uncomfortable found their fears chased away with laughter when he came up from under the water and took a big bite and said and no tootsies in the pool either! As a history teacher he had a way to get the best out of me- when I would be swamped with homework he would always encourage me to do my hardest assignment first "Get the tough stuff out of the way" he would say "and then the rest will be a breeze" I use this motto to this day. Thank you Mr. Theis for a life lesson that keeps me quoting the funniest teacher I have ever had. LittleBit Class of '84

I grew to know Bob Theis as a teacher in High School but grew to "know" him many years later. He greeted me heading up the bleacher steps through the press box to video CIHS football for many years. He always had a kind word and usually a complement. He played Santa for our family numerous times even when his health limited him. He truly loved people and cherished his little community! He will be fondly remembered and surely missed. Rest in Peace Mr. Theis!

Mr.Theis was my swim instructor way back as a youngster. I can remember being so afraid of the water, I was perhaps 5-6 years old. He made it fun and easy to learn to love the water. Later on in high school, he was the same, patient man. Glad to see you, a smile on his face and an incredible enthusiasm I will always remember.

Bob and I shared a love of Japan. He founded the Yuasa-Cambridge Sister City program. We worked together on several trips to Japan and hosting of Japanese students in Cambridge. Bob was a visionary of how people can come together with different cultures but similar interests. He loved people and being of service to people. I always enjoyed the pancake breakfasts where he sold tickets for at Christ The King Church. His smile and wit made my day. I am so sorry that I won't be able to enjoy those things with Bob anymore. He will be missed.

Mr. Theis was truly one of a kind, with the emphasis on kind. He loved teaching and it was evident by his enthusiasm and energy. He would help any student before or after school, as well as his prep time. He had this stash of chocolates in his cupboard, and after a test he would pass them around. He would buy them in bulk after each holiday. Other teachers knew where to go to get a chocolate fix. Now that I m a teacher, I can relate!
Mr. Theis had a way of making his classes fun. We would work hard at taking notes, but would always play games for review. I think he originated speed walking. I don't think I ever saw him walk slowly. Just a few fond memories to share.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. He was one of a kind, and will be missed.
Farewell Mr. Theis

I am a class of 1977 former student of Mr. Theis. I remember he always wore a clip on tie. We had a daily routine. He would make a joke as I passed by and I would pull the tie off. Except one day he wore a real tie, then oops! Any other teacher may have sent me to the principal, but he just made a funny face and we had a good laugh about that. Nicest teacher and really had a way of helping us remember what he taught. Fabulous sense of humor. Looking at my classmates facebook comments speaks volumes as to how much we all loved and respected him as a teacher and coach. My deepest sympathy to his family. He was a great man.

Too often we underestimate the power teachers have on their students. It may be a smile, a listening ear, a kind word, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of showing that you care. All of which have the potential to turn a students life around. Mr. Theis was just this type of teacher. He was an amazing man who touched the lives of so many of his students and those around him. My heart is heavy hearing about his passing and my deepest condolences to his family. Rest in Peace Mr. Theis, you will be truly missed.
