Obituary of Courtney Smith

Courtney William Smith, 88, of Cambridge passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the Cambridge Health Care Center. He was born August 15, 1919 in Grandy, Minnesota to William and Lilly (Stark) Smith. He grew up on a farm in Northeast Cambridge and attended the Stake Country School. After his schooling he helped on the home farm until he joined the U.S. Army on September 4, 1942. Courtney served during World War II and was a member of the Combat Engineers 12 Bravo. He fought at the battle of Normandy and was honorably discharged on November 14, 1945. Upon his discharge from the war he returned home to help with running the farm. Courtney continued to operate the farm until 1976 due to failing health. He moved to the Veteran's Home in St. Cloud a remained there for a few years and spent some time at other assisted living facilities before becoming a resident at the Cambridge Health Care Center over six years ago. Courtney enjoyed farming and also liked to create drawings. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Carroll and sister Thelma Thul. Courtney is survived by one sister Lou Ann Wicklund of North Branch and several nieces and nephews.
