Obituary of Marvin Hancock
Marvin George "Bud" Hancock, 88, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, July 21, 2014 at Golden Living Center in Rush City.
He was born on February 7, 1926 in Mora, Minnesota to George and Hilma (Songberg) Hancock. Marvin grew up on the home farm in Mora and attended school in Mora. Following his schooling he began working for his dad hauling cattle to South St. Paul. In February 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II. Marvin was honorably discharged in December 1946. Following the military he returned home and helped his father on the farm. Marvin went on to work as a mechanic at Gillespie Auto and it was there that he met his future wife Violet Peterson. They were married on August 21, 1951 at the Cambridge Lutheran Church and first made their home in Mora. He decided that he wanted to be married on August 21 so he could celebrate wedding anniversaries along with his two sisters. After Marvin and Violet's first daughter was born, the family moved to Edina where Bud worked for the Village of Edina for a few years. They went on to buy a farm east of Grandy and they farmed for over 56 years. After they retired from farming, the farm was sold to granddaughter Donna and husband Michael.
He enjoyed farming and liked watching his daughter Sue while she was baling hay. Marvin liked to garden, visiting his brother in Arizona along with Violet. He also, along with Violet, was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, was a member of the Cambridge American Legion, and the Braham Moose Lodge. He loved animals, especially the rat terrier dogs. What Bud especially loved to do was fish and spending time at his brother's cabin on Big Sandy Lake. He spent many hours sitting at the end of the dock, and is now sitting at the end of the dock in Heaven talking with his brother Ralph.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Alta Erickson and her husband Ray, Lila Eiden and her husband Dick, and brother Ralph. Marvin is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years Violet, daughters Susan Hancock (Kim Smith) of Stanchfield, Carol House of Grantsburg, WI, three grandchildren Donna Lundell (Michael), Erick Broberg and Cole House, sister Kay (Hilderd) Pearson of Braham, sister-in-law Mary Hancock of Minneapolis, special family friend Bill Broberg, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
