Obituary of Robert Weisbrod
Robert Clyde Weisbrod, 96, of Cambridge passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the Grandview Christian Home.
He was born April 15, 1912 in Princeton, Minnesota to George and Caroline (Westblad) Weisbrod. He grew up in Princeton where he attended school, and was a five year sports letterman and graduated from Princeton High School in 1931. He spent a few summers working in Florida and would go on to attend St. Cloud State University and later transferred to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. While attending the
U of M he received a letter from Bernie Bierman in 1934 asking him to try out for the football team..He was also active in Citizen Military Training and joined the National Guard. After college he worked a few years for Westman Silo in Princeton.
In 1941, while still with the National Guard, he entered active duty when the Guard was federally mobilized. He trained at Camp Claibourne, Louisiana and later in the Omaha area. During World War II, Bob served in England, Germany and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged and would return to Cambridge where he ran the Cambridge branch of Weisbrod Bakery until his retirement.
On July 14, 1952 he was united in marriage to Pearl Whitney at the Cambridge Lutheran Church. They made their home in Cambridge where Bob ran the bakery and Pearl taught school. Pearl passed away on June 7, 1997.
Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing, reading the paper, listing to and watching football and baseball. He was head of Civil Defense for several years and was a member of the Cambridge American Legion for over 62 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Pearl, brothers Charles and Louis Weisbrod, sister Lucille Oliver, niece Ginger Steuber, and nephew Jonathan Whitney.
Robert is survived by his sister Virginia and husband Bill Steuber of Cross Lake, brother Frank Weisbrod of Cambridge, brother-in-law Paul and wife Cynthia Whitney of Cambridge, and many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
