Obituary of Sylvia Babb
Sylvia H. Babb, 92, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Grandview Christian Home.
Sylvia Helena Johnson Babb was born October 17, 1915 on a farm near Marine on St. Croix, MN. She was the only child of William and Olive (Osberg) Johnson. After graduating from Stillwater High School in 1934 she worked as a maid and nursemaid on Summit Avenue in St. Paul. She then attended St. Cloud Teacher's College graduating in 1938. Sylvia taught in various rural schools until she was inducted into the WAVES of the US Navy in 1944. After continuing her education at Iowa State University, she taught at Cambridge Elementary, teaching 2nd grade until retirement in 1979.
On June 9, 1951 she married Donald "Pete" Babb and they were parents to one daughter, Diane. Sylvia and Pete celebrated 45 years together before Pete's death in 1996. They had many great trips together and especially enjoyed their timeshare in Mazatlan, Mexico.
Sylvia was an active member of the Cambridge Lutheran Church and belonged to Cambridge Women's Club, Monday Study Group, Swedish Club and worked with the American Cancer Society for 15 years.
The two most important things throughout her life were education and communication. She had a remarkable memory and the ability to make friends wherever she went.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald, and grandchild Katie Olivia. She is survived by her daughter Diane and husband Tom Connors of Cambridge, two grandchildren Dan (Kristen), and Laura, as well as other relatives and friends.
