Obituary of Henry Stomberg
Henry "Hank" Gerhardt Stomberg, 87, of Cambridge joined his wife in heaven on Saturday, September 20, 2008. Four months was the longest the couple had been apart since the two met 70 short years ago. Hank passed away at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital shortly before midnight.
Hank was born to Henry and Fannie (Bruns) Stomberg on March 24, 1921 in Renville County, MN. He grew up on the farm in Renville, MN but because of severe asthma, moved to Duluth at the age of 16. He also survived polio. Hank met Dorothy Pflueger at a youth group on February 16, 1938. The two graduated from Central High School and were married in the First Methodist Church on February 20, 1943. They resided together in Duluth, MN, Chicago, IL, Des Plaines, IL, Crystal, MN and finally settled in Cambridge, MN.
He worked at the Franklin Creamery as well as Kraft Foods, Inc. in Chicago. At Zachary Lane Elementary School in Robbinsdale he worked as their custodian from which he retired. Interestingly, Hank's father Henry had been the first person to clean at the Renville schoolhouse when it opened in 1907.
Hank loved to view the world through his camera lens. Thanks to that love, we now have many visual memories to share. To avoid the cold and snowy Minnesota weather, he and Dorothy migrated south to Weslaco, TX for many years. He also liked to play cards and cribbage, listen to baseball games on the radio, garden, and in his younger years he was known to do a little square dancing. He seemed to know the answers to all the crossword puzzles and Jeopardy questions.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fannie and Henry and his wife Dorothy on May 25, 2008.
He is survived by his daughters Susan Popovich of Gardner, KS, Carol Stomberg of Cedar, MN, grandchildren Celina (Bryan) Huffman of Gardner, KS, and Christopher Popovich of Granby, CO, great grandchildren Makayla and Allyson Huffman, and children in his heart Ann Dalager and Dale Popovich, sister Doris Dowling of Golden Valley, as well as other relatives and friends.
