Obituary of Dorothea Slemmons
Dorothea Lund Slemmons, 96, of Cambridge, formerly of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2008 at GracePointe Crossing East.
She was born December 7, 1911 in Vancouver, British Columbia the only child to Adolph and Mathilda (Carlson) Lund. The family moved to Minneapolis when she was very young. Dotty attended school in Minneapolis and graduated from Roosevelt High School and would go on to graduate as an honor student from the University of Minnesota in 1935.
On June 20, 1936 she was united in marriage to Garvin Slemmons in Minneapolis. The couple moved to Waverly, Iowa where they lived for many years. Dotty taught commercial education in Elbow Lake, Minnesota and later in Plainfield, Iowa and Bremer County, Iowa. In 1972 she stopped teaching and was the county auditor for Bremer County for 12 years. Garvin worked selling seed to the local farmers. Garvin passed away in 1994 and Dotty remained in Waverly until January 2004. She moved to Cambridge, Minnesota to live with her cousin Diane LaRowe who has cared for her since that time.
Dotty enjoyed sewing �" making much of the clothing she wore, she liked gardening, canning, and spent much of her time watching the stock market. She and Garvin were able to take several trips worldwide because of his seed sales. Dotty and Garvin were able to start an endowment fund at Wartburg College in Waverly that is still being used today for students.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband Garvin. Dotty is survived by several cousins and other relatives.
