Obituary of Roy Olson
Roy Edward Olson, 86, of Cambridge, formerly of Grandy passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2009 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital.
He was born August 22, 1922 in Saum, Minnesota to Anton and Ingeborg (Linnbo) Olson. Roy grew up in Kelliher, MN attending grade school and graduating from Kelliher High School. In June 1944 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He fought in the battle at Rhineland and received the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in December 1945.
In 1972 he married Beverly Hill and they made their home in Northeast Minneapolis. While in Minneapolis their first daughter Krista was born. A few years later they moved to Grandy and their second daughter Holly was born.
Roy worked many different jobs over the years, in the early 1950's he lived in Alaska and worked logging for about a year before returning to northern Minnesota and working for the railroad. Roy would go on to attend Dunwoody Institute and learn the trade of welding. He worked as a welder for several years until retiring in the early 1990's. Roy remained in Grandy until 2004 when he moved to River Hills in Cambridge.
Roy was a longtime member of the Isanti VFW. He enjoyed playing sports in his younger days, was a boxer in the Army, and enjoyed following sports, especially the Twins and professional wrestling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, former wife Beverly, and eight siblings.
Roy is survived by his daughters Krista and husband Thor Kolstad of Cambridge, Holly and husband Adam Baker of Brooklyn Park, three grandchildren Jaeger Kolstad, Christian and Clark Baker, step daughter Jean Ann Hill of Moundsview, step grandchildren Rebecca and Brittany Hill, as well as other relatives and friends.
