Obituary of Charlotte Hed
Charlotte Ann Hed, 73, of Cambridge, formerly of Champlin, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital.
She was born September 13, 1936 in Germantown, Pennsylvania to Paul and Katharine (Smith) Empie and was baptized at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Germantown. She was later confirmed in Nutley, New Jersey. Charlotte grew up in Pennsylvania and later New Jersey where she graduated from Montclair High School in 1954. She went on to graduate from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio in 1958.
On August 9, 1958 she was united in marriage to Walter Hed at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Nutley, NJ. They moved to Dubuque, Iowa where Wally attended Wartburg Theological Seminary while Charlotte taught school in Galena, IL. Wally received a call to serve as pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Scarsdale, New York and it was there that their first two children were born. The family spent six years in Scarsdale before moving to Clinton, Maryland. While in Clinton their third child was born and after five years the family moved to Paget, Bermuda where Wally served as pastor at Peace Lutheran Church. They remained in Bermuda for six years before moving to Champlin, MN where Wally was the organizing pastor at Servant of Christ Lutheran Church. During this time Charlotte went back to school and earned a degree in occupational therapy from St. Catherine University. Charlotte worked for Rehab Dynamics, traveling throughout Minnesota, retiring in the early 1990's. In 1996 they purchased a home in Cambridge and have been there since.
Charlotte was an active member of Cambridge Evangelical Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir, was active in sewing, quilting, ladies and reading groups. She enjoyed crafting, playing the piano, and always had an interest in nutrition.
She was preceded in death by her parents Dr. and Mrs. Paul Empie, daughter-in-law Nina Axelrad, granddaughter Sophia Hed.
Charlotte is survived by her husband Wally of Cambridge, daughter Kathy and husband Jeff Iverson of Staples, son Steve and wife Jennifer Hed of Putney, VT, son Paul and wife Michelle Hed of Ham Lake, nine grandchildren Becki, Kirsti, Lynnea and Jenessa Iverson, Natasha, Naomi and Noah Hed, Mikayla and Samantha Hed, sisters Barbara and husband Larry Greene of Zionsville, PA, Susan Lower of Nacogdoches, TX, as well as nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
