Mr. Fast was more than just a great teacher. He was a kind spirit. He never withheld praise, encouragement, or a kind word and he inspired me in many ways. I will forever be thankful that he dedicated his life to expanding the minds of America's youth. He was an amazing man and he is missed.

Mr. Fast was one of the most influentual teachers I had at CHS. I had a great respect for him as he showed each of his students respect. About 10 years ago I walked into the door of New Hope for the first time and who was standing there but Mr. Fast and he remembered me, that meant a lot considering I hadn't seen him in 10 years. May his family find peace in knowing the impact he made on many teenagers lives.

Sorry to hear - and yet understandably happy that the pain and suffering will be over for Mr. Fast and all of the family. He was truly the best teacher. I did get to tell him that at the choir reunion a few years ago - and he asked me why I thought so! Always made me think - even at that point in our lives. Condolences to the family. Not an easy time even if it's what you thought you were ready for!

Mr. Fast was one of the best teachers I ever had. He clearly loved his job and the subject matter. As an educator myself, I tried to emulate his methods, his enthusiasm and his respect for his students. He had a great sense of humor. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family.

In 1978 Dale Fenner and I chose not to go on the senior class trip, but instead went fishing at my parents cabin in McGregor. For those not going on the class trip there was "mandatory" testing and Mr. Fast was quite serious about those not on the trip attending. He directed the comments about this testing directly at Dale and I on several occasions prior to their departure, in part because he knew that we were not planning on being in class for those "mandatory" tests.
Upon his return from Chicago, and I believe to this day our saving grace, was the the note Dale's Mom sent stating: "Dale missed class on Friday due to an appointment with Dr. Fish".
As I recall, Mr. Fast looked over the top of his glasses and just smiled.
What a great memory. We grieve for your loss, we continue to love what he was for us...mentor, friend, caring educator.

I will never forget my math classes with Mr. Fast because he is one of the reasons that I myself became a math teacher. He was always so kind, helpful and understanding and I try to carry those same characteristics with me everyday. I just hope a little bit of what I do in my school has as much impact on my students as his impact had on me. Even after I graduated from CIHS and would see him in the community, he would always ask about myself, my family and my teaching. He will be dearly missed by everyone in this community because he was loved by so many of us.

I am sending my sympathies today to the family of my favorite math teacher at Cambridge High School. Mr. Fast was the kindest soul with a great sense of humor, and he truly cared for his students. I remember specific instances when he would ask me about what was going on in my life, and I know that he was truly interested and wanted to know. I have been a teacher now for 35 years, and Mr. Fast (he once told me, about 10 years after I graduated, that I should call him David, but I have such great respect for him, he will forever be Mr. Fast) was a wonderful role model. He made my high school experience so memorable, I wanted to do the same and help students through a terrifying and fantastic time in their lives. I smile a very large smile when I think of Mr. Fast, and I thank him for all he did for me and so many others. My condolences to you all and to all the students who were not fortunate enough to know him and have him as a teacher.

Marlys and family, My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this time of loss - remembering the wonderful person Dave was to so many young people during his time as a teacher with Cambridge - the many people who continued with their education at the Community College because Dave touched their lives - and myself, for knowing Dave from my teens through adulthood. Dave was a kind, caring and compassionate person - for his teaching and his love of a good laugh. I will always remember sharing an office space with him at the college - and a great cup of coffee before heading off to teach a night class. My prayers are with you Marlys - this has been a long battle and you both were triumphant in the fight. I pray that the strength you find in your faith with God will continue to hold you up in these next few days and beyond. You and Dave have always been special people to me, and I will remember Dave forever. Prayers, hugs and a lot of love will shower you during these next few days, and I will be there to collect my hug. Sending strength and love your way, Teri Jo Karstens-Jensen

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Fast. I was lucky enough to have him for a math teacher in 1973. I went on to study engineering in college, and currently manage an engineering consulting business. I really have Mr. Fast to thank for instilling in me an interest in math. To this day, when ever I set up an account on an internet site, and need to select a hint question for my password, I select "Favorite Teacher" and I always use D. Fast.

"Mr. Fast," as we were expected to call him in the late 1950s and early '60s, was my math teacher from my freshman through senior years at Cambridge High School. He had a "calm intensity" about his subject area, but he was one of the best teachers I had. One memorable experience in my sophomore year was when I was more talkative than usual during his class, and he had me come to the front of the room and recite the geometry theorems we were supposed to be studying. Fortunately for me, I had studied them the night before and successfully recited them. Nevertheless, I became a better student after that, and I sensed we had a better understanding of each other. Whenever I encountered him in town after my graduation, he was always cordial and we had good conversations.

I have enjoyed the opportunity to get to know Dave and his family. It was fun to hear stories about Thief River Falls where David was from because it made me feel close to home being from Grand Forks, ND. I will miss Dave and the songs he would sing. I will be thinking of you and your family.
