Obituary of Iris Bacon
Iris LaVern Bacon, 85, of Cambridge, formerly of Staples and Thief River Falls passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at GracePointe Crossing Gables West.
She was born February 19, 1927 the only child to Benoni and Mabel (Johnson) Gysland in Staples, Minnesota. Iris attended school in Staples and graduated from Staples High School in 1945. After graduating, since it was during WWII, she was recruited by the Army and worked at The Pentagon in Washington, DC as a civilian typist.
On November 9, 1946 she married Albert Bacon and they had five children, Daniel, Barbara, Kathryn, Janis and Laurence. Albert worked for "Ma Bell" and the family lived in several towns throughout Minnesota. Iris worked several different jobs including secretary, bookkeeper, seamstress and bartender.
Iris enjoyed watching hockey, football and baseball games. She had 11 grandchildren, most of them very athletic. She enjoyed 'treasure hunting" at thrift stores and garage sales. Iris enjoyed going to Curves, and became politically active at age 83, trying to make a better world for her kids and grandkids. She had spent the last 12 years living at Pine Village in Cambridge and enjoyed the wonderful friends and neighbors there.
She is survived by her children Danny Bacon of Fosston, MN, Barb Bacon of Colorado Springs, CO, Kathy and husband Matt Gellings of Idaho Falls, ID, Jan Bacon of Colorado Springs, CO, Larry and wife Denise Bacon of Cambridge, 11 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.
