My prayers are with the family at this difficult time. Dorothy was such a lovely lady . . . kind, friendly, welcoming, reassuring, and gracious. She welcomed me as a young woman to the community and remembered me unfailingly throughout the years.

My deepest condolences to the Hofstad family. I would occasionally see Dorothy on visits to Cambridge in the 30+ years since I graduated from high school. She was always glad to see me and asked how I was (and later how my family was) and I always felt better after those encounters.

It wouldn't matter what time of day it was, we could always stop by grandma's house and say hello. Even in the middle of dinner, she insisted that we stay and eat. It could be in the middle of the night and we were always welcome with open arms. If we needed to stay over night for any reason, there was always a spare room waiting for us. She was a grandma who was always so giving to her grandkids, family and other people. She was always there to support us, in good times and bad. She was always there to participate in our school activities. I know she was so proud of all of us, no matter what we did.
I always looked forward to going over to their house every Christmas. She would prepare the BEST food, and had plenty for everyone. She loved to entertain guests.
Whenever I see red geraniums, I will think of grandma. She always had them on the front step going into the house.
She's the kind of grandma who would insist on paying you for doing the smallest thing to help them out. Moving furniture, lifting something, or changing a light bulb. Even though I told her on several accounts that it was perfectly fine to help her without being paid, she wouldn't take no for an answer. A grandma is a special person, and I wish I could have seen more of her over the last few years. She will always have a special place in my heart, and certainly will not be forgotten. I love you grandma! Love, Jimmy.

What a perfect name for Dorothy Marie Hofstad: DOT !! The diminutive name practically jumps off the page with its one syllable declaration. A quick spark of energy, that, like a pointillist painting, marks the page with numerous points of contact forming a beautiful scene---can't you just see Dot connecting with each and every friend at a gathering, connecting the dots as she goes, and ending up having painted the room all by herself? Dot, whose tag-you're-it conversations/arguments created an energy unmatched by many, and often ended with a final declaration by Dot---a period, end of conversation.
I loved that Aunt Dorothy was a good sport. I remember A, no, I think it was THE one and only horse back ride we went on with Dot. I can still see this sprite of a woman whose legs were sticking out at 90 degree angles from the horse's back, because the gentlest horse happened also to be the biggest. I can also easily imagine this scene recounted to me after she visited my family in North Oaks: Dot bounding from the car, exclaiming colorful epithets as KoKo leaped in to give her a juicy welcome -to- the -Haucks kiss.
I admired Aunt Dorothy's love of entertaining and the appreciation she had for a wonderful event. She noticed the flowers one put around a cake, the vase sitting "just so" on the dining table, the lemon slice tantalizingly placed by a tea cup---it was the "Dotting" of "I"s that counted for her, in entertaining.
Dot was the perfect dot compliment to Russel'l's straight -forward exclamation, "Dorothy Marie!" --together they formed an exclamation point!
I loved that Aunt Dorothy was completely blinded to my brother and my faults. I don't think we ever did anything wrong in Dorothy's mind. How aggravating for everyone else, and supremely divine for us! We were absolutely perfect angels!!!
I enjoyed the stories of Aunt Dorothy as a nurse: Competent, reliable and absolutely aware of everything and everyone around her. She loved to serve and she loved to connect.
I loved Aunt Dorothy's ribald sense of humor…..and so did Jim. I never hesitated sharing a bawdy story with her, because I knew she'd love it!
I think we all accepted with humor and some trepidation Aunt Dorothy's "nosiness!" Why, she even weighed in very early on in my relationship with Jim…..in true DOT style. When I was living in Boulder and dating Jim, she left me a cute note, in the bathroom, no less. Having found a ridiculous book Jim had given me about slugs (and I'm sure having read the naughty inscription—definitely not meant for an aunt's eyes) she proceeded to tell me that Jim was the man, and that I shouldn't think twice about this guy being the right man---or something to that effect.
I loved that my parents loved Dot so much. She was a faithful and appreciative sister and sister-in-law, a fabulous aunt, a generous and elegant gift giver and a really fun person to know. I will miss my Aunt Dorothy. I will miss Dot!

I remember when Grandma and Grandpa came back from Europe. Grandma wanted to take me and Andy to McDonalds for dinner (Grandma and Grandpa LOVED McDonalds). So, Grandma came and picked up me and my brother and took us to the McDonalds in Cambridge. I ordered a bunch of food and of course, so did my brother, ha ha. Well, we were on our way home and my Grandma was driving just fine. All of a sudden, my Grandma hit the median of the street and the whole left side of the car was on the median driving. We FINALLY came down from the median and I told my Grandma to pull over so I could "check the car." I attempted to get my Grandma out of the car so I could drive. IT DIDN'T WORK! She was a very stubborn/smart norwegian! Miss you Grandma!

It was nearing the time of Michael's high school graduation and I was riding with Ann as she drove her parents somewhere (I don't remember to where). Russ & Dorothy were sitting in the backseat. Ann & I were discussing the plans for the open house. Talking about the guests, the plans, food, etc. Dorothy breaks in and says.... I will be bringing bars again!! (Background history... Dorothy had made a MANY MANY varieties of bars for Jimmy's open house.) Ann says, "mom, you don't have to make ANYTHING.... we are having cake and the rest of the food is covered". Dorothy being Dorothy..... says "WELL, I AM BRINGING BARS"!!! Dorothy begins to argue.... Ann doesn't want her mom to stress herself so again she tries to explain.... Me being me jumps in and says "Dorothy, seriously... your job is not to bake... your job is to come and relax & celebrate in your grandson's accommplishments!!!!. ALL is silent in the car for a few minutes. I am thinking I won.....AND THEN.... We hear very quietly/whispering... "What if I WANT to bring some.... I CAN you know!!!!".... So.... she won!!! She brought pans & pans of bars. She was the QUEEN of cooking, baking & entertaining!!!! I am sure that as we speak... she is busy baking & entertaining up in Heaven with Russ. I will miss you Dorothy... and your lemon bars!!!! God Bless you!!!

Dorothy, I am so glad that Andy was blessed with such a great Grandma in his life! I always enjoyed chatting with you at holiday get-togethers and at other times we visited you. Andy and I were so happy that you felt good enough to make it to our wedding in August, that will always be a special memory for us! I am glad that you are at peace now and with God and Russ (and many other family and friends). I look forward to telling our future kids about their Great-Grandma Dorothy and sharing fun memories with them. Love you! Jenna

Hey Grandma, We all miss you so much already, but we know you are in a better place. You were such an amazing grandmother to all us grandchildren. Like Grandpa, you always brought me McDonalds shakes when I was sick or had a surgery. You brought one every day for a week when I had surgery on...well...you know! You always came to my concerts and always made sure I got to work before I could drive. You also made the best ryebread and cookies. I'm glad you were my grandma and I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with you in your life. Love you very much Grandma! Love Eric

I was so surprised when I heard today of Dorothy's passing. I just want to express my sincere condolences to your whole family. Dorothy was one of my favorite people. I really enjoyed working with her in the sale of her home, she always had a smile on her face and a quick response to every situation. I am a better person for knowing her and I am sorry she is gone.
