Obituary of Edwin Samuelson

Edwin Franklin Samuelson, 100, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, May 4, 2007 at the Grandview Christian Home. He was born November 29, 1906 near Lake Elizabeth in Isanti County, Minnesota to Andrew and Augusta Samuelson. When he was a young child his family moved into Cambridge. On August 15, 1907 he was baptized into the Lutheran faith. Eddie attended school in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1927. After graduating he worked for a time at the Woolen Mills and in 1943 began working at the high school as a janitor. While working as a janitor Edwin attended night school to learn electrical and boiler operation. In 1947 he went to work at the Cambridge State School and Hospital and worked as an electrical steam engineer as well as inspector. In 1937 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Anderson, to this union four children were born, David, Linda, Karen and John. On March 5, 1957 Evelyn and their infant daughter died during child birth. In 1964 he married Hazel Griggs and they lived in Cambridge. After Edwin retired in 1971, he did various maintenance and handy work jobs around town. He and Hazel helped with meals on wheels and working at the senior center. Hazel passed away in 1989. Edwin remained at home, living an active life. In November 2005 he moved into the Grandview Christian Home. Eddie was a lifelong member of the Cambridge Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, and was good at fixing things, always happy to help anyone repair anything that needed fixing. Living near the Rum River as a child, it became his friend. As he grew he had much fun there with swimming, fishing and ice hockey. Even as a senior citizen he still would often drive to the river and see how it was doing. How nice it as when he moved into Grandview that he had a room that overlooked the Rum River. He was preceded in death by his parents, childhood sister Ruth, first wife Evelyn and infant daughter, second wife Hazel, brother Roy, sisters Ruth Samuelson, Lillian Skoog, Ann Sikorski, and sister-in-law Lillian Backlund. Edwin is survived by his children David and wife Judi Samuelson of Arizona, Linda and husband Gary Erickson of Florida, Karen and husband Roger Steele of Cambridge, John Samuelson of Oregon, 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, as well as many other relatives.
