Sue Olson Stewart (Mandrake Rd, Madison, Wis..across from Ken and Lela's house) posted a condolence

Dear Susie and family, Lori and family, John and family and Jim and family, Please accept my heartfelt sympathy in the loss of your beloved Mom... Lela is an inspiration...I use the present tense because she is an inspiration to me and will be continually as long as I live! I remember..receiving a phone call from Lela that she was visiting Susie and family in nearby Philadelphia and would I like to spend a few night with Lela while Susie and then husband took a respite…we walked with Ben and Anna in the nearby woodsy area discovering ants under rocks and natures wonders. I remember…later visiting Susie, Ben and Anna at their newer home where we shared beautiful colored autumn leaves sealed in waxed paper. I remember…my nights sleeping with Lela and talking and talking and talking till we became sleepy..how I enjoyed that time with her. I remember…Larry and I visiting their Cambridge waterfront home and seeing how happy they were there! I remember…a family dinner with the whole family (including the Dr!) and thinking “how wonderful that the family could still remain friends…” I remember.. when I lived across the street from the Hoffmans…Lela cooked a pot roast by first searing it in a frying pan..I had never seen my Mother do that and I learned from Lela..in fact, I today, did that exact pot roast method… I remember… when Lela discovered (I think it was Susie) sitting in the middle of Mandrake Road, she rushed out and gave her a hard spanking..Lela said to me “I had to make her never want to do that again..she could be run over by a car!” I remember…Lela and Ken’s visit (I think with Ben and Anna) to our 24 Euclid home in Pitman, NJ where we sat outside around our small Koi fish pond. I wasn’t doing well with my MS so did not offer them the niceties that one gives a guest. I remember … Lela wanted me to give piano lessons to Susie, which I did (she was an excellent student!), and wanting Lori to feel equally important, Lela wanted me to give Lori singing lessons..I knew nothing about singing lessons! But Lela thought caringly about Lori as she often did about any person. I remember… my very first image of meeting the new Lakeview Lutheran Pastor’s wife…I still retain that image today…Lela was coming out of the church and held fast the hands of Susie and Lori…. I remember… receiving Christmas cards and letters from Lela…ones in particular stand out because Lela included a picture of the six grandchildren sitting on a couch..She, thanksfully, included the nomenclature of each child and whose family to which they belonged! Lela was so proud of her grandkids!!! I remember… attending a concert of Susie’s kid (s) and seeing Susie as we walked into the hall. I remember hearing of Ben and Anna’s achievements thru the years. Of course they were the only grandkids who we personally knew and had met. I remember… Lela coming up to our Mandrake house to sit and visit my family when Larry, Davin and Larisa came to visit my folks..I was so glad she made those visits! I remember…Lela’s talk over the phone when Pastor Ken passed..and that when she was delayed coming home from church service and found Pastor Ken passed, she believed that God had a plan that Ken was resurrected on Easter Sunday! Lela was a rare gem and she still is my inspiration…I will miss her… I often called Susie’s number but was unable to make the call work..just wanting to know about Lela because I often thought of her. And I want to tell the person(s) who wrote the obit that it extremely captured Lela’s life! I could feel the love that went into the writing! Well done… I will be thinking of you all and wish I could be there on March 20th at 2 PM. Sue (and Larry)

I have to agree with Cindy about the reunions. The most memorable being at their home in Cambridge; probably, because brothers, Tom & Jim were able to be there as well. So much food, laughter, and stories. Kids fishing on the dock and Uncle Ken making sure everyone was having a good time. It's sad to think that most of Mom's family is now gone. But we love and loved them all. Thanks for the memories Aunt Lee. We will miss you.

I was the little girl in the wedding photo. I can still see the pews much taller than me in the church as I headed down aisle. I didn't drop the flowers in my basket even though I had been told to do so. Just too nervous, I guess. I have lots of childhood memories following that one, many of them while I visited Lee and Ken's home. She was a very special aunt, always ready for fun and full of energy. Loved you so much Aunt Lee.

Some of my fondest memories are of the Underwood reunions. Often if there was a piano or organ available, there would soon be a gathering a folks singing hymns or Christmas songs - even in the heat of the summer. I recall one reunion where she & Uncle Ken had been on a motorcyle trip, there had been some kind of accident in which she ended up with a beauty of a black eye. Boy, did her siblings rib her but she took it in stride. I loved listening to stories they would all tell about growing up on the farm, their animals or going to country school. She'd always get the little kids together to tell a story or sing or play. It was easy to see how much she enjoyed children. Once she and Ken moved to Cambridge I know she enjoyed the time with mom baking pies, entering spelling bees or going to the thrift store. I recall the blackboard on the kitchen wall and she had something chalked in for every day of the week, a very busy lady. She will be missed. She's at peace now, may God Bless her.
