Deepest sympathy to the entire Larson family. I was terrilbly sad to learn of John's passing. A great man who will be deeply missed by the entire community. I have fond memories growing up with the Larson kids, family get togethers and camping. John was instrumental in assisting Kathy and I in purchasing our first home after we were married. I also share another bond with John in service to our Air Force. I am currently deployed to Iraq and was so sorry I could not attend the services. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Lance & Kathy

Richard R here, from San Francisco.
I'm not quite sure if my not quite finished earlier message got sent, or went missing.
I was recommending a very readable, hard to put down book of short poems by author John Updike titled ENDPOINT, published in 2009. It's about his memories, and his facing his illness at life's end. Below is the description from the San Francisco Public Library, and I'm sure one or more branches of the East Central Regional Library will have it. It's also a good listen, on Books On Tape electronic books, if you have that opportunity through your own library.
John's sudden passing Monday morning was a shock to all of us. He and I had a fun, long chat in his office on Main Street the last time I was in Cambridge, sharing our mostly good memories of our days as students and neighbors. I wish now I had taped our talk.
Here's the book:
A stunning collection of poems that John Updike wrote during the last seven years of his life and put together only weeks before he died for this, his final book. The opening sequence, "Endpoint," is made up of a series of connected poems written on the occasions of his recent birthdays and culminates in his confrontation with his final illness.

Liz, We are so sorry for the tragic loss of John this week. I have always known who John was, but really got to know him last summer as he helped us look for a lake cabin in the Mora/Rush City area. We spent a few great Saturdays with him looking at many properties. We loved his great stories and sometimes corny jokes. He helped us make our lifelong dream of owning a lake home a reality and for that we are forever thankful. We will think of him often as we spend time there. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Your friends, Ann, Scott, Rebecca and Jonathan Ryberg

Liz and family, I am so sorry to hear of John's untimely passing, the loss such a wonderful man. Although I only knew him through his service to the credit union movement, it was plain to see that he was a caring, dedicated and loving individual. I will miss seeing his smiling face at the state credit union events, and especially the corny jokes that he always passed along to me. He knew I loved them! I pray that you and your family are comforted by the love of Christ during this difficult time. Cast your worries upon the Lord, for he cares for you. Sincerely, Kristina Wright

I remember when John and I dressed up in halloween costumes and went to the
bowling alley where Dorothy was bowling. They thought we were robbers so the
women hid their rings. No one recognized us even Dorothy who we were standing
by knew who we were.
We played on the same softball team and John caught eleven balls in the outfield
in one game. The most important part, we won the game. We shot baskets in the
winter time with our gloves on with only light from the yard light. We had a
lot of fun playing football on thanksgiving day with all the kids, snow or no
snow. I really enjoyed going to a viking game with John, we always had a lot of
fun together. John was a very loving and caring brother in law and we will miss
him a lot. We experience so much peace and rest know that he is now in his
heavenly home that God has prepared for him.
Dorothy, Tam and Tom, we will be praying for you knowing that God will give you
the strength needed for each day.
Isaiah 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you,
do not be dismayed, for I am your
God.
I will strengthen you and help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous
right hand.

Oh, how we are going to miss 'our' John. I loved saying "JOHNNY" when he'd walk in. And we'll miss our chuckles when every day maybe 2x a day at the same times, he have an errand to run -- of course with his stop at the bakery 'on the way.' John always had a joke to share and encouragement to give. He loved his family and his travels...so full of life that we can't get our heads around this quite yet. Oh, Johnny, how we're gonna miss ya........
