Reflecting back on my memories of Jan go to my memory of standing at the kitchen counter in Slayton listening to dad talking to uncle Lloyd with the news of Jan's polio. I was about six years old or younger then. That conversation is vivid in my memory. We all cried and prayed for her that day. Later, I remember visiting my cousins on the farm and Jan lying in a body cast on a plywood table in the dining room at their house. In all the time she lay motionless in that cast, there was not one complaint from her. Her positive attitude never changed as long as she lived.
We had many good times as adults. When I was a student at the U of M, we got together often. She helped me with my accounting classes and kept me from being discouraged with my understanding of the material. I credit her with my passing grades in that area. I was a hard science major and didn't grasp the subject matter easily. I loved to go to her place because she and her roommate had an indoor pool with artificial palm trees surrounding the pool. It was a welcome break for me.
I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to visit Jan and Jerry in their new home at the lake in 2008. I have beautiful photos from that visit. Jan was not feeling well at that time but still had the same positive attitude. Jerry took me for a ride on the barge and we had a wonderful dinner on their outdoor patio.
I have lived in California now for forty four years but we have kept in contact with great visits on the phone over the years. We also shared the same year of marriage. Jan and Jerry were married about five weeks before Susie and me.
Jan showed us how we are to live the Christian life through adversity that most of us will never experience in our lifetimes. She was always an encourgement to me. I know that we will be together again with all our relatives that have gone before. It will be greater than the Freedhem picnics when we were kids eating ice cream.
I love Jan and will always remember her smile. She will always remind me to look at the positive opportunities each day. God bless her memory.
Her Cousin,
Gene

Dear Jerry, Jon, Jennie, and family You have our deepest sympathy for your loss of Jan. She was an inspiration to all around her to live life to the fullest. She will be missed greatly, but left us with so many great memories. Although it's difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. (unknown author) We are so proud to have had Jan as our dear friend. There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under Heaven: A time to be born and a time to die: A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance. (Ecclesiastes 3 1-2, 4) Jan is dancing in heaven and smiling down on her family and friends. Love You

Dear Jerry,Jonathan & family and Jennie, Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you for your loss...It is hard to loose a loved one, and at the same time you have loving memories of a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. I met Jan, for the first time, at her and Jerry's wedding. I found her to be such a warm and friendly lady who looked lovely in her wedding attire. I knew Jerry was marrying a special lady. I know how dearly missed she is by her family and all who knew Jan. A comforting thought is that she is with The Lord, in his Heavenly Home. Take care Jerry and family. We will keep you in our prayers that The Lord will comfort all of you during this difficult time. Love and God's Blessings, Melanie and Bruce

We were so sad to hear about Jan. She was an amazing lady. We love having her and Jerry as neighbors. She was always upbeat and enjoyed visiting. She was very gracious. We loved enjoying dessert on the 4th of July each year. Your family is in our prayers.
