These three things play a part in many of my memories of Grandpa. Bike rides with Grandpa and me included a glorious faceplant in the gravel by me, a pair of dogs being shot by Grandpa (remember the gun he carried on rides in Worthington), and a trip with Jesse, Chris, and Grandpa and Grandma in which I burnt out pretty quickly and ended up taking the shuttle to the end of the days course. If any of the cousins wonder why we ended up with the ugly red banana seat bike to use at their house it was because he let me pick that bike out one time when I was visiting. Sorry about that.
Every day at Grandpa and Grandma's house was marked by the reading of the Bible and "Our Daily Bread". Even early on his yearning to draw close to God was apparent to me. When I pull my Bible now I sometimes think of the minutes, hours, days, and probably years, that Grandpa spent in Gods word. I am so thankful for that example.
And finally for the belts. They were Grandpa's primary mode of discipline for my brothers and I when we were visiting his home, and it wasn't how you would think! Grandpa would silently disappear to his bedroom and come back to wherever I/we were misbehaving with a belt. His discipline consisted of the scariest stare down I have ever experienced (sorry Dad, you get second) as well as a snapping of his belt against itself after he would fold it in half. He would threaten to put our hands inside that snapping leather torture machine and we would immediately modify our behavior! I learned years later that sticking your hand in that snapping belt was entirely painless. I guess I should have called his bluff.
I love you Grandpa and am grateful for nearly 30 years of having you in my life. Save a game of Rook for me in heaven.

My Dad showed unbegrudgeing sacrifice toward all his children. I'd like to share a story illustrating one time I remember that happening.
We had a horse that no one had ridden much and needed to be broke. I had an interest and wanted to be able to ride that horse so I gave my best effort one afternoon - to no avail and was ready to give up forever. At that moment, Dad drove on the yard, parked his tractor, got out and headed for the house. He stopped when he saw me and knew my troubles without saying a word. He took the pony from me, got on it and rode it bucking all the way across the plowed field. It seemed like hours to me. He came back, handed me the reins, and told me to ' go ride'. I did ride that pony and for several years.
I appreciated what he did and thought about it, but never said anything about it. However, in our last weeks together, during one of his late night talks, he began to tell me that story from his perspective. It went like this: One day he said he had had a terrible day of farming and nothing had gone right. As he climbed down the tractor to go into the house at the end of the day for a much needed rest, he saw me standing by that 'stupid' horse and it was obvious that I had been trying and trying with no success. He said he really wanted to walk past me, but couldn't. He took the pony and rode a mile one way and a mile the other way and brought it back to me. He told me I should probably ride it. He went into the house absolutely exhausted and in the morning had never been so sore in his life.
In my childishness, I didn't know it then, but I do now - the sacrifice of time and physical energies given to his little girl had had a huge price. He modeled that sacrifice over and over, putting the needs of his family over his own desires.
