Obituary of Hazel Edna Schwartz

Hazel E. Schwartz, 93, of Cambridge passed away Friday,April 17, 2015, at GracePointe Crossing Gables West. She was born October 17, 1921, in Minneapolis, MN, to David and Beatrice (Preston) Mattson. Hazel grew up in Duluth, MN, attending grade school at Lester Park Elementary and graduating from Central High School in Duluth in 1940. As a young girl, Hazel loved to ice skate and roller skate. She always liked to read and enjoyed music as well, playing the piano, mandolin and guitar. On September 5, 1942, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, David Schwartz, in Duluth, MN. They made their home in Minneapolis while Dave attended school at Northwestern Bible College and Bethel Seminary. Hazel worked a short time at a department store as an elevator operator, then spent the rest of her days being a supportive pastor’s wife, loving mother to three girls and friend to many. Alongside her husband, she ministered for over 40 years serving several Baptist General Conference churches in the upper Midwest, including churches in Mankato, Roseau, Isle, Benson and Grand Marais, Minnesota. She had a positive attitude in life and was very content, having no problem spending time by herself. Hazel thoroughly enjoyed being a pastor’s wife and was willing to help in all the ways she could. To the end of her days, she could be found reading her Bible daily, as well as many other books. She delighted in visits from her family and always had plenty of funny stories to tell. All who knew her will remember her many sayings, such as “Only you can control your attitude” and “I wish I knew how to grow wrinkles!" She was preceded in death by her parents, husband David in January 2006 and brother, John Mattson. Hazel is survived by her three daughters, Nancy and husband Lloyd Bergstrom, of Rochester, Eileen and husband Tom Johnson, of Woodbury, and Joyce and husband Loren Baker, of St. Paul Park, eight grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, brothers, Lloyd Mattson of Duluth, Art and wife JoAnn Mattson of Prescott, AZ, as well as many other relatives and friends.
