Obituary of Marvin Smith
Marvin G. Smith, 93 of Cambridge passed away on Friday, November 5, 2010 at the Cambridge Medical Center.
He was born April 9, 1917 in Fairfield Township, Swift County, Minnesota to William and Mary (Sanders) Smith. Marvin grew up in SW Minnesota. He enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard in 1939 and served for 5 ½ years. His overseas duty during WWII was spent in the Pacific Theatre from 1941-1944. He was married in uniform on October 20, 1944 to Lucille Marie Nelson of Dell Rapids, S.D.
The family farmed in S.D. until 1962 when they moved to rural Cambridge, MN. Marvin was also a union carpenter, retiring in 1981. He was a 40+ year member of the Carpenters & Joiners Union Local 851 in Anoka, MN. He was also a member of the Howard McCarty American Legion Post 290 in Cambridge, MN.
Marvin enjoyed his family, including the annual Smith Picnic. He was a hard worker, enjoying farming the land. Marvin was known for his skill at picking corn by hand and was proud of the fact that he once picked over 100 bushel in one day. He was a wonderful storyteller. He loved telling jokes and reminiscing about WWII.
Preceded in death by wife of 60 years Lucille Marie Smith, parents William and Mary, brothers Willie, Delbert, Art, Leonard, Lester and Howard, sisters Gladys, Edna, Naomi and Margie. Survived by daughters Linda (Orlin) Ellefson and Carol Ann Smith, grandchildren Aaron, Mark (Katy) and Jill Ellefson and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Widowed in January 2005, Marvin was fortunate to remain on the farm until the end of his days.
